Know a Plant Dad? Here Are 3 Stylish Plants You Can Gift Him

The past few years of social distancing have unleashed a curious phenomenon. Plant Dads! It seems that self-isolation and group size limits are resulting in men not just growing their beards but growing plants, too. Plants are naturally mood-boosting and improve the air quality in our homes, so it’s no wonder plant care has become a favourite pastime for these new plant parents. Know any? Here are three stylish plants you can gift a Plant Daddy.

Calathea-with-Candle

Prayer Plant

Calathea, also known as Prayer Plants, get their name from how the leaves fold in the evening, resembling hands folded in prayer. These stunners are absolutely beautiful and can add bold color and texture to your space.

Calathea is a moisture-loving plant, but overwatering is still a concern and can introduce many problems. Making sure the plants receive lots of bright indirect light can help regulate the dampness while allowing the plant to thrive.

Don’t be too worried if you notice the leaves beginning to curl or the stems of your Calathea drooping. These are signs of dehydration. Paying attention to these indicators is essential, but these hardy houseplants can bounce back within a day or so after receiving water.

Ficus-with-candle

Rubber Plant

There’s more than meets the eye with the Ficus Elastica, also known as the Rubber Plant. These marvellous plants stand out indoors because of their architectural shape and thick, glossy, dark green leaves.

To enjoy your Rubber Plant for longer, follow these simple steps:

• Rubber Plants thrive in a bright space with indirect sunlight, and away from cold drafts.

• Water about once every 2 days. Be careful not to overwater. Water when the soil is dry to the touch.

Ficus-Elastica-Rubber-Plant-Ruby

Ficus Ruby

Sister to the Rubber Plant, the beauty of this Ficus Elastica ‘Red Ruby’ is in its imperfections, such as its striking orange-reddish variegated leaves. It looks stunning from every angle.

Prune your Ficus to maintain the shape or to keep the plant at a manageable size. Make sure to use clean shears or clippers and cut right above a branching stem or leaf node. This will promote new growth and create a full canopy.

Under the right conditions, Ficus can grow quickly. Pruning is one way to keep the growth in check, but limiting how often the plant is repotted is another way to keep a Ficus at an ideal size. Repotting every other year can prevent the plant from quickly outgrowing your space.
